(With yesterday being the American holiday Veteran's Day, this tip is a day late!)
We're all drowning in notifications these days. In a recognition platform, receiving too many generic alerts can make truly important messages (like an approval needed, or a new recognition received) easy to ignore.
This week’s quick win is all about leveraging the Admin Portal to set smart default notification preferences, ensuring users are engaged, not overwhelmed.
Why Set Default Notifications? ✅
When a new user first logs into Awardco, their notification preferences are automatically applied. By setting up intelligent defaults, you can:
- Highlight Key Actions: Ensure critical notifications, like Approval Assignments or My Recognitions, are turned On by default.
- Reduce Noise: Set less critical notifications, like general updates on Others’ Recognitions, to Default Off to empower users to opt-in only if they choose.
- Guarantee Critical Info: Use Locked On sparingly for non-negotiable communications (e.g., critical compliance updates).
- Control Visibility: Define what groups of people users receive notifications about (e.g., only their Direct Reports, their Team, or Everyone).
How to Configure Your Defaults ⚙️
It only takes a few clicks to set the baseline for a positive user experience!
- Navigate to the Admin Portal.
- Click Notifications from the left-hand menu.
- Click Notification Settings.
From here, you can set the default state for every notification type and channel:
- Default On: Users receive it but can turn it off.
- Default Off: Users do not receive it but can turn it on.
- Locked On/Off: Users cannot change the setting (use these very selectively).
💡 Pro-Tip: Check the Others' Recognitions Visibility Options section. Setting a default like Team or My Circle instead of Everyone can drastically reduce a user's weekly email volume!
Setting your notification defaults is a powerful way to increase user adoption and ensure the right message gets to the right person at the right time. Give your team the gift of inbox peace!
